This exhibition features artwork from Glenhyrst’s remarkable permanent collection that have not been on display in the gallery for several years or decades, in addition to those which have never been displayed at all. These works, selected by Glenhyrst’s Curator Matthew Ryan Smith and Chair of Collections David M. Leng, emphasize the special contributions made by local, regional, and national artists as well as artists from the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. Today, Glenhyrst’s impressive permanent collection includes over 600 artworks. This exhibition provides an opportunity to showcase some of the collection’s rarest and most outstanding artworks. Moreover, Glenhyrst is proud to announce that the permanent collection will be involved in all gallery exhibitions and events, including exhibitions by seminal Brantford artist Kapwani Kiwanga and Mohawk collective Talking Earth Pottery.

Selected Prints from the Permanent Collection
Glenhyrst holds a number of important prints and works on paper by important Canadian and international artists in its collection. Many of these works engage Brantford, Brant Region and Six Nations of the Grand River. For example, prints by local artist Anne Meredith Barry pay homage to Alexander Graham Bell, whose early experiments during his time living in Brantford led to his invention of the telephone. Other works, namely those by acclaimed artists Karel Appel (Dutch), Michael Snow (Canadian), and Robert Indiana (American) prove the exceptional quality and breadth of works in the collection.

Rarities and Wonders
Glenhyrst’s permanent collection includes a number of prints that feature fantastical and often atypical subject matter. A variety of these works have been grouped together in order to question our expectations and pre-conceived notions of contemporary art practice and the types of responses it produces visually, emotionally, and intellectually.
