Call for Submissions: Biennial Juried Exhibition 2023

Glenhyrst Art Gallery invites emerging and established artists living and working in Ontario to apply to its Biennial Juried Exhibition. 

Submissions must include a complete application form, available at glenhyrst.ca from January 11th– February 15th. Please follow the online instructions for application requirements and payment instructions.

JUROR:

Sonya Blazek is the curator at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (2019-present). Prior to assuming this role, she was the assistant curator at the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (2017 to 2019), the curator (2016-2017) and assistant curator (2010-2016) at the Thames Art Gallery and served as the gallery administrator for the artist-run-centre ARTspace (2008-2010). She received her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Art History from Queen’s University.

IMPORTANT DATES:

o   Online entries open on Wednesday January 11th.

o   Deadline for entries is Wednesday February 15th at 5:00pm.

o   Selected artists will be notified on March 2nd – 3rd.

o   Selected art must be delivered between Saturday March 4th and Saturday March 18th, within Glenhyrst open hours (Tuesday to Friday, 10am – 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 11am – 4pm).

o   Art must be collected between Saturday May 20th and Sunday May 21st, between 11am and 4pm.

o   Opening Reception and Awards Presentations to take place at Glenhyrst Art Gallery Saturday April 1st, 2023 at 7:00pm.

PAYMENT: Non-refundable entry fees are payable through the online application.

TERMS OF ENTRY:

Applications are only accepted electronically and should be sent through our online form (available January 11th).

Artists may submit 2 recent pieces (completed between 2021–2023) for jurying. Open to all emerging and established artists 18 years of age and older, living and working in Ontario.

Submissions can include paintings in any medium, drawings, mixed media, fibre art, sculpture, photography and new media. Work must be original.

All work must be exhibition-ready. For 2-dimensional work, this includes being professionally framed or hangable with appropriate mounting hardware. NOTE: If artwork is not considered exhibition ready when delivered it will not be included in the exhibition.

For 2-dimensional submissions:

  • Send only one jpeg image of the entire artwork as per the online specifications

  • Maximum size of actual artwork: 132cm wide x 244cm high (approx. 4ft wide x 8ft high)

  • Diptychs and triptychs must fit within these dimensions

3-dimensional/sculptural pieces:

  • Please send two jpeg images (two different views).

Film, Video and New Media:

  • Submissions must be accompanied by clear exhibition specifications.

No substitutions – only work that has been submitted and accepted by the jurors will be included in the exhibition.
Works sold are subject to 30% commission to Glenhyrst Art Gallery.
Application entry fee is not refundable.

Glenhyrst Art Gallery reserves the right to decline a submission deemed unsuitable for the show – this includes work that is not dry, not properly framed, work created with assistance, reproductions, or copies of another’s artwork. Giclée’s of paintings are considered reproductions and are not acceptable.

Shipping and Insurance:
All shipping arrangements and insurance to and from Glenhyrst Art Gallery is the responsibility of the artist. Glenhyrst Art Gallery will not accept collect shipments. Artwork selected for the Biennial Juried Exhibition will be insured by Glenhyrst for the duration of the exhibition.

Exhibition Agreement:

All decisions made by the jury panel are final. By entering the jurying process, the artist agrees to have their work available from March 25th – May 19th, 2023 to exhibit publicly for the duration of the exhibition. The artist grants the gallery permission to photograph works for publicity, educational and reference purposes. No entries may be withdrawn from the exhibit until after closure.
