Michael Hayden

Michael Hayden, sculptor (born at Vancouver 15 Jan 1943). Hayden studied at the Ontario College of Art and is a sculptor in light. His work uses electronic and computer technology to produce pieces of extraordinary colour and scale to complement the vast spaces of contemporary urban architecture. One of his pieces, Arc-en-ciel (1978), was created for the vaulted atrium ceiling of the Yorkdale (Toronto) subway station, designed by Arthur ERICKSON and Associates. The piece can be viewed from outside the station - the most spectacular perspective is from the air. It is widely recognized as a model of the successful integration of sculpture and architecture. Other notable commissions include Totem (Homage to Brancusi), created in 1985 for the lobby of the Max Bell Theatre in Calgary and also The Raven (Bringer of Light), a ceiling-suspended art piece commissioned in 2012 for the Edmonton International Airport.

Hayden lives in Santa Rosa, California and has had over 30 solo exhibitions in Canada, the US and Europe. His art is included in numerous public collections, including those of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, the ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO, and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Holland.
