Zoran Antonio Mušič

Zoran Antonio Mušič was a Slovenian painter and graphic artist known for his colorful landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Born on February 12, 1909 in Bukovica, Austria-Hungary (now Slovenia), he went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb from 1930–1935  and travel widely. In October 1944, Mušic was arrested by the Nazi regime and placed in the Dachau concentration camp in Germany, and while there created over 200 sober drawings documenting his life. Created under intense and painful circumstances, he was able to preserve around 100 of these works after his liberation by American forces in April 1945. He would go on to create his most acclaimed series, entitled We Are Not the Last, in the 1970s based on his experiences surviving in Dachau. Over the course of his career, Mušic becane a member of the third Ecole de Pari and achieved international recognition—exhibiting his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, numerous galleries in Munich, and multiple Venice Biennales. His work is now held in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna, among others. The artist died on May 25, 2005 in Venice, Italy.
