Clay!

“Bobble Head” Sculpture - Any Creature You Can Imagine

Ages 9+ (recommended for Art Reach*)

In this lesson we will build whimsical sculptures of an animal/creature/character, complete with moving “bobble heads”! Students have the creative freedom to decide on their own unique idea for their sculpture. Our sculptures will be made in two sections: the body is a cone form, and the head is a hollowed-out sphere. The head and body are not attached, but rather the head balances on the point of the cone allowing for the head to rock and wobble. Together we will focus on pinching methods to hand build the two main structures, and then students will learn how to properly attach their components, and add details and designs to bring their creature to life. (*Clay pieces will air dry in your classroom within 5-7days and can be painted once dry using a liquid tempera or acrylic paint)

Bobble heads are recommended for art reach due to complexity and time required.

Lidded Pinch Pot - Choose Your Theme

All Ages (lesson adjusted accordingly)

In this lesson we will practice using both pinching and slab building processes with our clay to build a two-part container. We will create a pinch pot for the container and roll a slab for the lid, complete with a sculptural handle and carved details and designs. You can choose for your class to focus this lesson around a specific holiday or season (think “Present Pinch Pots” or “Pumpkin Pinch Pots”), Patterns/Lines/Shapes and Textures (great for our kindergarten friends), or a standard circular pinch pot and lid that can be decorated according to the student’s own interests. (*Clay pieces will air dry in your classroom within 5-7 days and can be painted once dry using a liquid tempera or acrylic paint)

Snowman Pinch Pot

All ages (lesson adjusted accordingly)

Let’s learn to build with clay using a pinching method to create a snowman body out of 3 little bowls. We will sculpt our tiny pots, roll and attach a clay coil scarf, and carve our designs and details to transform our pinch pots into a snowman sculpture. (*Clay pieces will air dry in your classroom within 5-7 days and can be painted once dry using a liquid tempera or acrylic paint)

Hanging Holiday Ornaments

Ages 4 – 9

In this workshop we will create festive clay hanging ornaments (2 per student). This activity is perfect for young artists in kindergarten and primary grades. We will focus on the slab building clay process and learn how to draw and cut shapes out of our clay (using tracing templates and cutters to assist where needed). We will learn how to attach pieces of clay together to layer shapes on top of each other to create interesting designs on our ornaments. Holes will be made in each shape so string or ribbon can be tied through the pieces once the parts are dried and painted. (*Clay pieces will air dry in your classroom within 5-7 days and can be painted once dry using a liquid tempera or acrylic paint. *String/Ribbon is notprovided)

Old Favourites! Have a previous clay or art workshop you’d like to take? Let us know and we’ll see what we can do!

Pictured: Animal Pinch Pots (All ages - lesson adjusted accordingly)

Let’s learn to build a pinch pot with clay which we will then transform into the head of an animal by attaching ears and carving facial features and textures. Foxes, frogs, monkeys, bears, cats, dogs – wherever your imagination takes you! Clay pieces will air dry in your classroom within 5-7 days and can be painted once dry using a liquid tempera or acrylic paint.

Drawing!

Picasso Style Self Portrait - HALLOWEEN Edition!

Ages 7+

In this lesson we will look at Pablo Picasso and the art historical movement called Cubism as our inspiration to draw and colour creative and expressive self-portraits with a fun Halloween twist! We will learn about portrait drawing in this unique style that captures multiple perspectives, with a focus on line, shape, colour and value. This lesson can be focused on drawing and colouring, or we can add in some painted elements as well. (*If we are incorporating painted elements into this project it is dependent on how much time we have available within the class block)

Snow Globe Still Life

Ages 7+

Let’s talk about how to create a convincing STILL LIFE artwork with a dimensional LANDSCAPE element inside it! In this drawing lesson we will emphasize the use of space when constructing our composition through the use of foreground, middle ground and background when drawing the snow globe setup itself, as well as when creating a convincing suggestion of dimensional space in the environment they choose to create inside the snow globe. Our lesson can emphasize a seasonal winter theme or something more festive for the holiday season, and can be focused on drawing and colouring, or we can add in some painted elements as well! (*If we are incorporating painted elements into this project it is dependent on how much time we have available within the class block)

Printmaking/Mixed Media

Kusama’s Pumpkins (Printmaking & Drawing/Colouring)

All ages (lesson adjusted accordingly)

We will look to contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama for inspiration to create a mixed media Fall artwork! Each student will design and create their own patterned printmaking stamp to print all over their chosen background coloured paper. We will then draw, pattern and colour a pumpkin in the style of Kusama that will be cut out and glued onto their printed background paper. In this lesson we will discuss colour, pattern, contrast, Kusama’s signature polka dots, and the block printing printmaking process to create dynamic and graphic pumpkin artworks.

Falling SNOW (Printmaking & Drawing/Painting)

All Ages - lesson adjusted accordingly

In this lesson we will combine a variety of materials and processes to create layered and colourful snowflake artworks. Using a printmaking method students will design their own snowflake stamps to print into their artwork, along with drawing materials such as oil pastels, crayons and watercolour paint to experiment with a wax/oil resist technique. In this lesson we will draw, paint, cut and layer our drawings to resemble snowflakes falling from the winter night sky.
